The Terai

Trip Overview

Two national parks on the plains south of the Himalaya. One private naturalist. Choose Chitwan for rhino country close to Kathmandu, or Bardiya when you want space and a real chance at tiger.

The Terai is Nepal’s other wilderness: Sal forest, river, and grassland at 150 metres — not a mountain trail, and not a zoo.

Chitwan is a five-hour private drive from Kathmandu. Base in Sauraha. Dawn jeep, a canoe on the Rapti, and a Tharu village evening. Greater one-horned rhino is the signature; tiger is possible.

Bardiya is a flight to Nepalgunj, then about two hours by road to Thakudwara. Nepal’s largest lowland jungle, fewer vehicles, and the country’s best odds of tiger — walking safari, jeep, and the Karnali.

October to March is cool and clear, with animals at the waterholes. We travel small, never bait, and put park fees into protection. You can do both parks if time allows.
