These are not city walks. They are pilgrimages with altitude, plains, and overnight stays: Hindu and Buddhist, mountain and Terai.
Pilgrims come to Nepal for moksha at Muktinath, for the garden where Siddhartha was born, and for the Janaki Mandir where the Ramayana is still a living street.
We do not fold these into a Kathmandu sightseeing day. Muktinath needs a Jomsom flight, a jeep, and time at the 108 spouts. Lumbini needs a dawn walk in the Maya Devi precinct. Janakpur needs a night in Mithila, not a photo stop.
From Pokhara or Jomsom you climb into Mustang: ice-cold Muktidhara, the Jwala Mai flame, and Kagbeni on the Kali Gandaki. From the Terai you walk Lumbini’s monastic zone, Thai, Tibetan, Burmese, and Japanese viharas around the Ashoka Pillar, then east to Janakpur’s ponds and white marble.
When dates and fitness allow, we add Gosainkunda, the high lake of Shiva, as a walking yatra. A licensed pilgrimage guide briefs offerings, dress, and what not to photograph the night before each shrine.
Six places of practice, none of them a Durbar Square. Fly, drive, or walk; stay overnight; leave time to sit.
Two days on the plains. Three or four when Mustang is the point. A week when you want all three shrines without a bus circuit.
