From the misty forests of Shivapuri National Park just north of Kathmandu to the vast wetlands of Koshi Tappu, every frame tells a story of biodiversity and natural beauty.

Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, within easy reach of Kathmandu, hosts more than 300 bird species including the Spotted Forktail, Eurasian Jay, Great Barbet, Himalayan Bulbul, and Kalij Pheasant.

Photographers walk through oak, rhododendron, and pine forests, crossing streams and waterfalls that create perfect conditions for landscape and macro work. Morning light filtering through misty woods creates the ethereal atmosphere nature photographers dream of capturing.

The 16-day Bird Photography Tour moves through subtropical wetlands, dense forests, and spiritual plains where rare species like the Sarus Crane, Spiny Babbler, and Bengal Florican can be captured in their natural habitats.

Practical photography considerations

Nepal’s diverse altitudes and ecosystems require thoughtful preparation.

Equipment

At high altitudes, dry dusty trails can lead to sensor dust. A Rocket Blower and sensor swabs are essential. Cold temperatures drain batteries quickly — carry 2–3 batteries per camera body and keep them warm in an inside pocket.

Best seasons

Autumn (September to November) offers clear skies and crisp mountain views. Spring (March to May) brings blooming rhododendrons and colourful landscapes.

Respectful photography

Always ask permission before photographing individuals, especially in rural communities. Photography at cremation ghats is permitted only from the far bank with explicit family permission.
