Trip Overview
The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is one of the most remote and challenging treks in Nepal, taking you to the base of Mount Kanchenjunga (8,586m), the world's third highest peak. This demanding adventure offers pristine wilderness, diverse ecosystems, and authentic cultural experiences in the far eastern region of Nepal.
This trek requires a special restricted area permit and is perfect for experienced trekkers seeking solitude. The trail passes through remote Limbu and Rai villages, dense forests, alpine meadows, and high-altitude glaciers. The trek visits both North and South Base Camps, offering spectacular views of Kanchenjunga and surrounding peaks.
- Day 1 : Arrival in Kathmandu
- Day 2 : Fly to Bhadrapur → Drive to Taplejung (1,820m)
- Day 3–6 : Trek to Ghunsa (3,595m) via Chiruwa, Lelep, Amjilosa, Gyabla
- Day 7–8 : Acclimatization in Ghunsa
- Day 9–12 : Khambachen, Lhonak, North Base Camp (5,143m), return to Ghunsa
- Day 13–16 : South Base Camp route via Selele La, Tseram, Ramche, Oktang
- Day 17–19 : Descent to Taplejung
- Day 20 : Drive to Bhadrapur, fly to Kathmandu, Departure
Day 1–2: Kathmandu, Bhadrapur, Taplejung
Arrival in Kathmandu. Fly to Bhadrapur, then drive through tea gardens to Taplejung, the gateway to Kanchenjunga region.
Day 3–8: Trek to Ghunsa, Acclimatization
Trek along the Tamor River through subtropical forests and Limbu villages to Ghunsa. Rest day for acclimatization. Optional hike to Jannu Base Camp viewpoint.
Day 9–12: North Base Camp (5,143m)
Trek to Khambachen, Lhonak, and Kanchenjunga North Base Camp for close-up views of the world's third highest peak. Return to Ghunsa.
Day 13–20: South Base Camp, Descent, Departure
Cross Selele La Pass to Tseram, Ramche, and Oktang (South Base Camp viewpoint). Descend to Taplejung, drive to Bhadrapur, fly to Kathmandu, and depart.

Essential Gear
- Trekking boots (well broken in, high ankle support)
- Large backpack (60-80L) + daypack (30-40L)
- Sleeping bag (-20°C to -25°C rated), trekking poles (essential, heavy-duty)
- Headlamp with extra batteries (2-3 sets), water bottles/hydration (4L)
- Sunglasses (Category 4), sunscreen (SPF 50+) and lip balm
Clothing
- Thermal base layers (multiple sets), fleece jacket and pants
- Heavy down jacket, waterproof/windproof jacket and pants (Gore-Tex)
- Trekking pants (convertible and insulated)
- Warm hat, sun hat, balaclava, buff, heavy-duty gloves and mittens
- Wool hiking socks (8-10 pairs)
